Prof Lionel Green-Thompson

Prof Green-Thompson is an Assistant Dean - Teaching and Learning at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. The title of his PhD awarded in December 2014, was 'The nature of social accountability in South African medical practice and education – a qualitative reflection'. The research explored the perspectives of social accountability amongst communities, medical students and medical education partners and reflected on its role in educating practitioners for the 21st century. The emergent models highlight the importance of relationships of the educating system within communities and with the health systems in general. The role of reflective practice was seen by students as an important part of their development. The partners involved in the education of doctors (academics, clinicians and health administrators) urged the development of a revised professionalism which highlighted social accountability. Lionel is a specialist anaesthesiologist who completed this study in the field of medical education. The study promises to contribute to the international discourse on social accountability with impact for teaching and learning in the health professions. Lionel was appointed the Assistant Dean: Teaching and Learning for his faculty in July 2014 following completion of the Carnegie Fellowship. In April 2015, Lionel was promoted to the position of Adjunct Professor. He continues to teach in the Post Graduate Diploma in Health Sciences Education focusing on assessment and transformative learning.
